Area home sales soar 26% in October
Central Ohio’s first gain in home sales in more than two years was followed by an even stronger increase in October, the Columbus Board of Realtors reported Monday.
Sales of single-family homes and condominiums totaled 2,021 last month, up 26 percent from 1,609 in October 2008, the board said. That follows a 10 percent gain in September sales, the first such increase in 26 months.
The board attributed the increase to a strong inventory and the first-time home buyer tax credit, which was set to expire in November but was recently extended. Signs point to a likely strong month of November sales as well, with the number of home in contract up 17 percent in October.
Home sales in Central Ohio outpaced the nation, which saw a 10 percent gain compared with a year ago. Around Ohio, sales were up 7 percent.
